The new St. Vincent de Paul charitable pharmacy is the first of its kind in Wisconsin. Intended to serve low-income Dane County residents with no other option for pharmaceutical coverage, this fully licensed facility is the state’s first stand-alone charitable pharmacy. This means the pharmacy – not a part of any medical clinic or hospital – honors valid prescriptions that clients accepted into the program have received from physicians and other licensed prescribers. The medications and services of the pharmacy are provided without charge. The charitable pharmacy has been serving clients who had previously been receiving the Society’s assistance in obtaining needed medications through vouchers issued for another pharmacy. Operating its own charitable pharmacy allows St. Vincent de Paul to forgo paying pharmacy dispensing fees and allows the charity to obtain low- and no-cost medications through programs only nonprofits may access. Much of the focus of the new charitable pharmacy is on providing what are often relatively low-cost drugs needed to treat acute conditions, such as infections, or chronic conditions, such as high-blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and some mental illnesses.
